Monkey-O-Kee Poster
Client: Barrel of Monkeys, of course
This is an 8.5×11″ poster for the upcoming annual Monkey-O-Kee event which is sure to be rockin’. The poster was a lot of fun to make and I tried some new things. It’s partially inspired by the album art for Franz Ferdinand’s You Could Have It So Much Better (which itself is inspired by Russian avant-garde), and partially by the ad campaign for Sophia Coppola’s Marie Antoinette. Both really convey the idea of rock and roll and I think it works nicely for this poster.
Please come to this event by the way, you will have fun. Need tickets? Email me!

Poster for Barrel of Monkeys at the Wilmette Theatre
Clients: Barrel of Monkeys, The Wilmette Theatre
I wanted to do something similar to last year’s poster, but I thought last year’s was a tad garish and I didn’t like the colors. I also wanted to play around with scale and whitespace.
The Wilmette Theatre is a movie theater that hosts occasional live shows. This year, just as last year, we’ll be featuring some BOM short films during the show, so I decided I wanted kind of a classic movie poster look. (Particularly since Mike Tutaj, who will be directing the films, is a master at re-creating film styles.) My inspiration mostly came from the work of Saul Bass, who did the posters of Vertigo and Anatomy of a Murder.
The banner at the bottom was a required add-on that I didn’t know about until I had finished the design. It doesn’t quite go with the blue, but I think overall it looks all right.

There was originally a Nutcracker in the lower left corner but I had to change it for various reasons. I had some trouble coming up with another toy to put there and only realized until after I had finished that a Jack-in-the-Box would have been perfect. Oh well.
It’s finally up. This is still the “alpha” version of the redesign. We wanted to have it live by Oct. 5 (the date of the Fancy Schmancy Benefit), so I haven’t implemented the CMS yet (I’ll be using Expression Engine). Once that’s in place, I’ll be able to add blog, search, contact form, and mailing list functions; as well as the massive story archive, company member pages, and multimedia. Not to mention the IE fixes. But for now I’m pretty satisfied with what we’ve got.

Here are some photos of the Fancy Schmancy invitation, so you can see how it folds. Bonus: hi-res shots of my thin and hairy wrists.

Here’s what the back looks like:

Once again, you’re invited. It will be a splendid evening, and it’s for a wonderful cause.
Website for Earthbound Vegan Cuisine
I originally did a website for Earthbound a few years ago, before I had a full understanding of CSS and web standards. This is a new, updated version. I wish I had some food photos to use in the design, but the only photos left from the old design were of sandwiches that are no longer on the menu, and the photos themselves were not that great anyway.
Unfortunately the actual website (and Earthbound itself) is not active at the moment, but you can click on the image for a localized copy.

This is the inside of the invitation. It folds in thirds horizontally to a size of 5 inches by 7 inches. I’ll post photos of the full invitation itself once they’re back from the printer. (You’re invited, by the way.)

Hi! Tai here. FYI, while I designed each of the items featured on this page, I didn’t design the page itself. I’m using a WordPress theme called Sharpfolio. I’m currently in the middle of redesigning this site using ExpressionEngine and hope to relaunch soon.
